I recently finished 3 quite important books, that talk about love, real and deep connection between people and how does it all work – Art of Love by Erich Fromm and Sexownik by Katarzyna Miller. The 3rd one we all know – The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. And I wanted to talk about the topic of Love as today is 24th of December and, even though not entire world was raised in a Christian culture, we all know what’s about.
” Mayority of people want to be loved rather than love and this is their problem” – one of the first sentences in Fromm’s book. And I couldn’t agree more. We don’t do things just do make other person happy – we expect something in exchange. We can call it an investition – once I give something to you, show you my feelings or anything else, you need to give it back to me. There’s nothing for free in this world. But Love should be selfless, shouldn’t it be? We are tought that world is tough, rough and we need to be selfish. Otherwise world will destroy us. That’s why it’s not so common any more to get pure kindness and love without expecting anything for it.
Love is an attitude, and sometimes, a feeling that apperas when a person is mature in a healthy way. Love is a need to take care of other person without expecting anything else for it. That’s why Fromm called mother’s love the purest of them all – because of lack of expectations.
Love is an “luxury commodity”. Not many people are able to reach that point in their lifes to be able to be there for people and at the same time don’t expect anything back. ( Obviously I don’t refer to the business situations. We talk about family, friends and romantic relationships). To Love is to do an art – it’s a craft. It takes understanding, practicing and a lot of austerities. It also takes maturity- the understanding of myself and a sincere love to myself. If you don’t love yourself, you won’t be able to give love to anybody else.
Love is something we all need – we need to give and share. Stop thinking about receiving – start giving.
“It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important.”
